Tanagers end season with 34-7 loss at Winner
Last Friday, Oct. 14, the Tanagers were faced with a lot of adversity in the football game against the Warriors at Winner.

In the storied history of the 50-year span of football competition between Vermillion and Winner, there have been many weather-related confrontations in the west river climes (i.e., a triple overtime 3-0 Tanager win in a torrential downpour). But this 2005 night there was no rain, no snow, no wind, no bugs or mosquitoes.

Playing unusual situations created by lost fumbles and interceptions, the Tanagers were able to use a 91-yard touchdown run by Andrew Pier to take a 7-0 lead after one quarter. Not much more can be said for the visiting team's offense as the Warriors stifled every attempt for a come back after falling behind 12-7 at halftime.

Winner seemed to have great field position and created a formidable "hill to climb" for the defense. To add insult to injury, a forced fumble by the Tanagers into the endzone was ultimately covered by the Warriors for a TD.

Nothing seemed to go right in spite of a commendable effort by the defense. Leading the Tanagers was Cody Hayes with 5 solo, 10 total tackles; Mike Hanson 10 Ts; Donny Stewart 9 Ts, 1 QB sack; Kyle Brunick 9; Pier 8; Canka Wilch 8 Ts, QB sack; Joe Miller 7 Ts, 1 fumble recovery; Jerrod Freidel and Tony Kronaizl 6 Ts each; Bobby Dykstra 5 Ts, pass interception.

Vermillion closes out its regular season with a 2-6 overall record.

"This game was really a microcosm of the entire sesason," said coach Gary Culver. "Turnovers, which led to poor field position, our inability to close out offensive drives in the red zone, and our inability to stop the rush defensively plagued us all year. It just seemed like we were our own worst enemy all season long.

"I'm especially proud of all the seniors who have provided such good leadership throughout the season," he continued. "We will certainly miss all of them but wish them the best in all their future endeavors. Our younger players are already looking forward to next season."
