Tanagers suffer season’s fifth loss

Tanagers suffer season's fifth loss
In a Big 8 Conference game last Friday, Oct. 7, it became defense oriented for both teams, but a steady, error free, Lennox offense was instrumental in the outcome.

To begin with, the Orioles took the opening kickoff and proceeded to drive the length of the field using a 15-play, 75-yard, 10-minute time span to score. Conversely, the Tanagers were held to minus-4 total yards in the first half. The second quarter was a nightmare for the home team as they lost two fumbles (one for an Oriole TD) and a stifling defense which allowed the visitors to score 21 points.

The only highlights for the Tanager offense were a couple of long passes which ended with touchdowns. Midway through the third quarter, Kyle Brunick connected with Reid Meierkort for a 35-yard TD. Then, in the waning minutes of the game, the JV reserves went 50 yards in four plays (one a 35-yard pass, Meierkort to Bobby Dykstra), and a 3-yard pass, Meierkort to Jackson Freidel for a TD with .01 second on the clock.

The defensive statistics include 16 individuals: Donny Stewart had 8 Ts, a QB sack and 2 tackles for loss. Joe Miller had 6 Ts (4 solos); Cody Hays and Dykstra had 6 each; and the trio of Andrew Pier, Mike Hanson, and Kyle Hubert each recorded 4 Ts. The remaining stops of the 55 tackles were shared by the other defensemen who scored at least one tackle each. Cody Miller intercepted a pass.

"It was another tough loss for our team as I felt our kids really played hard the entire game this week," said coach Gary Culver. "We continue to be our own worst enemy as turnovers in the second quarter resulted in short fields and scores for Lennox. They capitalized on all of our miscues and you cannot give a good football team like this that many opportunities. The second half, we outplayed them but we had just dug ourselves too big a hole to climb out from after the second quarter.

"We want to finish our regular sesason on a high note as we travel to play an old rival, the Winner Warriors," he continued. "We've had many great games with Winner over the years and I would suspect that this one will be no different. We are both fighting for playoff positions so there will be extra incentive for both teams in this game."

The Tanagers' overall record falls to to 2-5 and their conference record falls to 0-3. They will close out their regular season by playing the Winner Warriors. The Warriors have a 3-3 record on the season. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 14 in Winner.
