VMS football teams win double-header
In a double-header involving Vermillion Middle School vs. Elk Point/Jefferson seventh and eighth grade football teams in the VHS practice field Thursday Sept. 29, the results were great for the Redbirds!

The seventh graders won 6-0; the eighth graders won 38-6.

Here are the summaries of the two games.

Lauren Tolsma and Jason Gault coach the eighth graders.

Eighth grade

Offensively The Tanagers rushed for 212 yards on 22 carries and completed 2 passes for 33 yards. Scoring touchdowns were: Jordan Robinson from 38 yards out; Nick Mart 3 yard carry; Tanner Mart 43-yard dash; Cody Merrigan 14-yard carry; and 27-yard pass from Earl Kiertzner to Evan Hanson.

Defensively, the Tanagers put together another solid effort allowing only 51 yards rushing, and 42 yards on one pass completion for the Huskies.

"This group of eighth-grade football players really has a desire to hit hard and take it right at the opponents," said coach Tolsma. "They all work hard in practice which makes coaching them easy and fun for myself and coach Gault."

"The seventh graders continued to get better this week," said coach Jamie Parish. "Steve Deal had an early score on a QB keeper to take the lead 6-0 against the EP/J Huskies. Tyler Husby and Frank Jandreau had great games running the ball, picking up yards on several tough runs.

"Defensively we were led by several standouts enroute to our first shutout. Husby, Jandre, & Deal had some nice stops, along with Eric Storm, Dexter Mehlhaf, Ty Osborne, Tyson Jandreau, and Marquis Knight. Frank Jandreau also had an interception."
