Coyote soccer wins key league match
The South Dakota women's soccer team (12-5-1, 5-4-1 NCC) avenged an earlier season loss to North Dakota (10-4-1, 5-4-1 NCC) by defeating UND, 3-2, in overtime Oct. 30 on a penalty kick by Taryn Ketter. The win gives the Coyotes a crucial NCC victory and an important regional win, with two matches remaining in the regular season.

At the 93:49 minute mark, Ketter, a junior from Columbus, NE, remained perfect on the season in penalty kicks (3-for-3), as she put her shot low and to the right of the North Dakota goalie to break the 2-2 tie and up USD's unbeaten streak to four matches. Ketter was given the opportunity after sophomore Ashley Ervin (Western Springs, IL) was fouled inside of the box, with 6:11 remaining in overtime.

The Coyotes, who outshot UND in every period and finished with a 19 to 10 advantage in shots, struggled to get on the scoreboard, until the 67th minute of the match.

North Dakota's Jenna Barr scored the first goal of the match at the 21 minute mark on an assist from Lisa Glasoe, to give UND a 1-0 lead.

At halftime, USD led in shots, 10-4, but had no goals to show for it.

In the second half, the Coyotes picked up the pace and began its scoring at 66:52, when freshman Angela O'Loughlin (Broomfield, CO) scored her second career goal on an assist from junior Amy Duba (Sioux Falls), to tie the match at 1-1.

Less than two minutes later at 68:27, Ervin was the recipient of a Tina Brummer (Gretna, NE) pass and put the ball past UND's Ashley Rohwer for her 11th goal of the season and 19th of her career. Ervin's 19 career goals places her third all-time at USD and her 50 career points (19G, 12A) also places her third on the career points list.

North Dakota didn't quit after trailing 2-1. UND answered with a Kelsie Niezwaag goal at 71:51 on an assist from Jenna Barr that forced the match into overtime, where Ketter's heroics ended play.

For the match, the Coyotes placed 11 shots on goal.

and recorded four corner kicks, to six shots on goal and three corners for North Dakota.

In goal, USD's Keyton Wheelock (Traverse City, MI) allowed two goals and made four saves in 93:49, while Rohwer finished with eight saves and three goals allowed.

Playing in their last home games of their career at USD, seniors Beth Schuster (Omaha, NE) and Jessica Schnell (Lincoln, NE) each had three shots and a shot on goal.

USD will play its final two regular season matches on the road. The Coyotes will play at Augustana on Friday, Nov. 4 at 4 p.m. and at St. Cloud State on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 1 p.m.
