Edelen receives award for distinguished service
The University of South Dakota is pleased to recognize the achievements of one of its finest. Joe Edelen of Vermillion received the Distinguished Service Award at the annual meeting of the South Dakota Library Association (SDLA) which was held in Pierre. Edelen is the bibliographic control librarian and systems administrator at the I.D. Weeks Library at USD.

The award honors an SDLA member who has made notable contributions to the library profession, has significantly furthered the development of libraries in South Dakota or has performed exemplary service for an extended period of time.�

The nomination stated that Joe "has worked in libraries in South Dakota for nearly 40 years, and he has been an untiring advocate for ensuring that South Dakotans receive the best library services possible, working within his own library, his public library and the state library."

Joe has been active in the library profession serving as president of the SDLA and as executive secretary of the Mountain Plains Library Association for over 30 years.�He has also been active in the American Library Association and the South Dakota Library Network. He has served as chair of the Board of Trustees of both the South Dakota State Library and the Vermillion Library Board.
