Voice of Democracy winners named

This year's seniors from Wakonda participated in the Annual Voice of Democracy Contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The participants recorded their essays on audio tape. The topic for the year's essay was "How I Demonstrate My Freedoms." There were 36 participants � 25 from Vermillion and the 11 seniors from Wakonda.

This year's winners were all from Wakonda, with first place given to Ashley Anderson, who received $75; Jessica Peterson, second, who won $65; and third place winner was Sandra Geuther, who received $50.

Anderson's and Peterson's essay will continue on to districts. There are more opportunities to win more money at this level. If they advance to state they get a free trip to Washington, DC and a chance to win a $25,000 scholarship.
