Tanager girls' varsity downed by Dells
The Vermillion Tanagers girls' varsity was shot down by the Dell Rapids Quarriers 69-42 in basketball Dec. 17 at Dell Rapids.

The loss gave Vermillion a record of 1-3 while Dell moved to 3-0.

"We ran into a very good team tonight that played very well," said coach Jamie Parish. "Coach Dvorak is a great coach and has built a very solid program. The girls play a lot in the summer; they have a stable coaching staff and always have their freshmen ready to play basketball at the start of the season. It's a goal of ours to eventually get to that level; it takes some time but we are definitely making progress. "Our kids played very well for large portions of the game, but we showed our youth and inexperience during critical stretches. We have worked so hard on fundamental things that we haven't had as much time as we would like to work on game management. But we have some time over Christmas break to work on those things now," he said.

The Tanagers fell behind 16-14 at the end of the first period, trailed 32-20 at halftime, and then trailed 49-33 going into the final period.

Vermillion hit eight of 18 three-point attempts and connected on four of 12 free throw tries. The Tanagers connected on 15 of 43 from the field, while Dell Rapids was 28 of 54 from the field. The Quarriers hit four of 10 three-point attempts and connected on nine of 15 from the line.

Although defeated, the Tanagers had some individual bright spots.

"Annie Roche played a great all-around game," coach Parish said. "She handles the ball for us, scores for us, and dishes out a few assists every night. As the season goes on more and more teams will start to recognize her as one of the better players in the state. We wouldn't trade her for anyone at any level. Michelle Olson did a nice job defensively, pulling down five boards. Several other kids also made contributions. We know that we just need to continue to get better every day, we play an extremely tough schedule and wins will not come easy. But if we continue to improve, we like our chances of playing well at the end of the year and hope to be playing in Mitchell on a weekend in March."
