Tanager varsity begins season with win
The Vermillion Tanagers defeated Harrisburg 55-42 in boys' basketball Dec. 9 at Harrisburg in a win ignited by a first-half blitz.

Kyle Brunick pulled down 11 rebounds and made three assists. Jordan Boots poured in 13 points and made three steals.

The Tanagers jumped in front 15-4 after the opening period, led 34-11 after the second quarter, and then led 47-25 after the third quarter.

The Tanagers committed only 9 turnovers while forcing 24.

"I'm very pleased with our first game," said Vermillion varsity coach Jason Huska. "We played good pressure defense and caused 24 turnovers. Offensively, we had good ball movement and got good shots."

The Vermillion varsity improved its record to 1-0, while HHS dropped to 0-1.

Vermillion made 4 of 20 three-point attempts and made 7 of 14 free throw attempts. The Tanagers sank 18 of 39 field goals, while HHS was 13 of 36 from the field. HHS connected on 3 of 15 three-pointers and made 7 of 14 free throw tries.

Vermillion was outrebounded 48-31.

The Tanagers had some excellent individual efforts in the win.

"Andrew Pier had seven steals and scored 20 points," coach Huska said.
