Tanager varsity topped by Cardinals
The Vermillion Tanagers boys' varsity was topped by the South Sioux City Cardinals 68-53 in basketball Dec. 16 at South Sioux City, IA, after falling prey to a 21-7 second-quarter blitz.

The loss gave Vermillion a record of 1-2 while South Sioux moved to 3-2.

"We did not play our brand of defense," said coach Jason Huska. "We were slow reacting and because of that we fouled too much. We didn't play as hard as we are capable. It was a good learning experience for us."

The Cardinals ended up hot from three-point range, canning four of eight from long distance.

The Tanagers led 19-16 at the end of the first period, trailed 37-26 at halftime, and then trailed 45-39 going into the final period.

Vermillion hit five of 13 from the line. The Tanagers hit 22 of 58 field goals, while South Sioux was 22 of 54 from the field. The Cardinals connected on 20 of 33 free throw attempts.
