The Coyotes were led by All-American Turner Trofholz (Schuyler, NE) who had a double double with 27 points and 15 rebounds. Trofholz picked up his second double double of the season and now has 16 in his career.
USD's Eric Hall, a sophomore from Huron, added 18 points while David Nour, a senior from Armour, had 11 points.
The 23rd-ranked Coyotes hit 27-of-59 field goals for 45.8 percent but made just 10-of-35 shots from three-point range. USD was 15-of-24 for 62.5 percent from the foul line.
USD opened the game with an 8-0 start (15:17) as freshman forward Ross Winnekins (Plymouth, MN) scored a pair of inside baskets. Oklahoma Panhandle State rebounded with a 16-6 run to grab a 16-14 lead at the 9:10 mark of the first half. USD fought back and regained a 29-25 lead with 5:08 to play on a steal and a lay-up by Nour. The Coyotes' lead was short-lived as OPSU finished the half on a 15-3 run to take a 40-32 advantage at halftime.
OPSU pushed their lead to 11 points (51-40) at the 14:07 mark of the second half as Brandon Woods scored inside.
USD gradually worked itself back into the game behind the play of Trofholz, who scored inside at the 7:36 mark to cut OPSU's lead to 63-58. After OPSU scored on its next possession, Darrick Leonard (Hazel Crest, IL) hit a three-point basket at the 6:09 mark to draw USD within, 65-61.
OPSU continued to maintain a lead until the final three minutes of the game. USD trailed 71-65 when Trofholz converted a three-point play at the 2:18 mark. On USD's next possession, Hall canned a three-point basket to tie the game at 71-71 with 1:36 to play. Two foul shots gave USD a 73-71 lead with 14 seconds to play. OPSU received a basket from Tim Anderson with two seconds to play and pushed the game into overtime.
In overtime, OPSU quickly took a 76-73 lead as Nick Malinowski hit a three-point basket at the 4:25 mark. However, Hall answered that basket with a three-pointer at the 3:55 mark as the game was tied at 76-76.
From that point on, neither team made a field goal and USD made 3-of-6 free throws to take the win. A foul shot by Trofholz gave the Coyotes a 79-77 lead with 10 seconds left to play. OPSU had a shot at the win but Anderson's three-point field goal was offline in the final seconds.
OPSU was led by Malinowski, who had a double double with 20 points and 12 rebounds. He hit 6-of-13 shots from three-point range. Juan Carson added 19 points and Anderson had 12 points for OPSU.
