Senior All-American Turner Trofholz (Schuyler, NE) scored 16 of his game-high 21 points in the second half as the Coyotes shot 52 percent (13-of-25) after halftime.
USD, who received 21 points off the bench, including 11 from sophomore Dustin Little (Castlewood), led by 10 points at halftime, 35-25, after trailing just twice in the period.
Sophomore Eric Hall (Huron) started the game off with three of his 16 points on the night, 20 seconds into the contest. The Coyotes kept the lead until Wayne State's Dusty Smith hit a three of his own at the 12:05 mark in the first half. WSC's David Walters added another three to give the Wildcats a four point lead, 18-14, at 11:25.
Following a Rane Mergen (Dell Rapids) steal, Trofholz began a 7-0 USD run with a jumper followed by a three by redshirt freshman Jesse Becker (Plymouth, MN) and a jumper from fellow redshirt freshman Colby Fitzgerald (Dell Rapids).
WSC's Tom Sherlock ended the run with a basket at 7:45 to cut the Coyote's lead to one, 21-20.
Bryce Caldwell then scored three of his 13 points to retake the lead for the Wildcats. USD answered with a trey from freshman Mitch Begeman (Sioux Falls) to give the Coyotes the lead, 24-23, a lead which held the remainder of the game.
In the second half, South Dakota led by as many as 14 at the 11:33 mark, when Trofholz scored assisted by Nour.
For the game, USD shot 45 percent (27-of-60) from the field and was 7-of-23 (30.4 percent) from three-point range. The Coyotes made 10-of-14 (71.4 percent) at the foul line and forced 20 turnovers.
In addition to Trofholz's 21, the Coyotes received 10 points from Becker and eight points, seven assists and six steals from senior David Nour (Armour).
