Vermillion had trailed by five at halftime.
The season-opening win gave the Tanagers a record of 1-0 while HHS fell to 0-1.
"We came out very slow, but rallied to get a very good win," said coach Jon Reuvers. "This group received a very good lesson on playing the first half as hard as they played in the second."
Vermillion fell behind 22-15 at the end of the first period, trailed 24-19 after the second quarter, and then led 35-27 after the third period.
The Tanagers made 1 of 3 three-point attempts and hit 6 of 8 from the line. Vermillion made 18 of 40 field goal attempts, while HHS was 15 of 38 from the field. HHS made 3 of 6 three-point attempts and made 3 of 6 free throw tries.
