Coyote men snap two-game skid with win over Upper Iowa
The South Dakota men's basketball team (12-4) snapped its two-game losing skid with a 93-66 nonconference win over the Upper Iowa Peacocks (2-16) behind four players in double figures at the DakotaDome on Jan. 10.

Three players finished with 23 points in the game including All-American Turner Trofholz (Schuyler, NE), who recorded his ninth double double of the season. Trofholz finished with 11 rebounds, while sophomore Eric Hall (Huron) hit six three-pointers and finished just shy of a double double by scoring 23 points and grabbing nine boards. Hall scored 11 of his 23 points in the first eight minutes of the ball game.

Upper Iowa scored the first basket of the game, a three-by Marcus Uhlenhopp, to garner its first and only lead of the contest. USD scored the next eight points and never looked back.

The Coyotes quickly pushed the lead to 18 points, 27-9, on a three-pointer by redshirt freshman Jesse Becker (Plymouth, MN) at 10:14. The Peacocks then went on a 12-0 run capped by two of Nick Larson's team-high 23 points at 8:02.

USD, who turned the ball over a season-low six times, responded and took the lead back up to 13 points at halftime, 39-26, when junior Darrick Leonard (Hazel Crest, IL) made a jumper with 42 ticks left before intermission.

In the second half, the Coyotes continued its pressure and forced six more Peacock turnovers (12 in the game). USD led by 20 or more points for the remaining 12:46 when redshirt freshman Colby Fitzgerald (Dell Rapids) hit a three-pointer to give the Coyotes a 60-38 lead.

For the game, USD shot 52.6 percent (30-of-57) from the field, including 60.7 percent in the second half. The Coyotes knocked down 16-of-30 (53.3 percent) three-pointers and were 17-of-25 (68 percent) at the foul line.

Fitzgerald finished with 13 points, while Becker added 11 for USD. Leonard finished with eight assists, one shy of tying his career-high (9 vs. Morningside, Dec. 5).

UIU was held to 35.4 percent (23-of-65) shooting from the field and was 47.1 percent (8-of-17) from three-point range. The Peacocks, who outrebounded the Coyotes, 41-35, were 12-of-16 at the free throw stripe for 75 percent. Turmel Woods added 13 points for Upper Iowa.
