Tanagers lose overtime thriller
The Vermillion Tanagers lost to the Akron-Westfield Westerners 64-59 in an overtime battle in boys' basketball Jan. 21 at home in the first round of the Dakota Valley-Vermillion Classic.

The score was tied 51-51 after regulation.

Jordan Boots poured in 25 points, including seven 3- pointers. His 3-pointer with 9 seconds left in regulation tied the game and sent it into overtime. Andrew Pier scored 6 points, grabbed five rebounds, made four steals and 10 assists.

The Tanagers led 16-13 at the end of the first period, trailed 25-20 after the second period, and then trailed 39-31 after the third quarter.

The Tanagers committed only 7 turnovers, but still picked up the loss.

Both teams were sharp from three-point range, with the Tanagers 13 of 19 and the Westerners 4 of 8.

It's simple we did not play our brand of basketball," said Vermillion coach Jason Huska. "We scored enough points to win but we just did not get it done defensively."
