Tanagers rally to defeat EP-J Huskies
Helped by four players in double figures, the Vermillion Tanagers rallied to beat the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies 68-62 in boys' basketball Jan. 17 at home.

Vermillion had trailed by one at halftime.

EP-J fell from the unbeaten ranks, giving them a record of 8-1. Vermillion improved its season mark to 3-4.

Jordan Boots scored 16 points, including three 3-pointers. He made two of them in the fourth quarter. Andrew Pier contributed with 14 points, 10 rebounds and four assists and Jeff Donnelly scored 14 points, grabbed seven rebounds and made two steals.

The Tanagers trailed 18-15 at the end of the first period, trailed 32-31 at halftime, and then led 51-49 going into the final period.

The Tanagers heated things up from three-point range, hitting 8 of 14 from long distance.

"We made some adjustments at halftime and the kids really came through," said Vermillion coach Jason Huska. "We handled the press better and offensively we got good shots. The kids are playing with confidence. I'm proud of our effort."

Vermillion connected on 8 of 16 free throw tries. The Tanagers sank 26 of 51 field goal attempts, while EP-J was 26 of 55 from the field. The Huskies made 3 of 11 free throw attempts.

The winners needed good efforts from several performers.

"Donnelly and Pier made seven of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter when Elk Point-Jefferson kept fouling in an effort to prolong the game," coach Huska said.
