VHS gymnasts entertain 8 teams at Winter Wonderland
The Tanager gymnastics team hosted the seventh annual Winter Wonderland on Tuesday, Dec. 27.

The real wonder was where is the winter? With temperatures in the 40s and

intermittent sunshine, it hardly seemed like December!

There were eight schools represented at the meet which began at 11:30 a.m. at the VHS gym, decorated in a holiday motif with large imitation snowflakes and a Christmas tree covered with

silver ornaments, to create a festive atmosphere for the holiday season.

Coach Mark Upward instituted the annual meet and was aided by his family and assistant coach in preparing the gym.

With over 80 gymnasts and a necessary eight rotation format, the meet was completed in four and a half hours and included a special fun contest to determine who could maintain a handstand without "crumbling" for the longest period of time. Each grade level competed and the winners were:

Seventh grade Mechaela Melbrech, West Central, 23.48 sec.; Eighth Emily LaBrie, Clark, 13.93 sec.; Freshmen Tia Krier, Vermillion, 15.76 sec.; Sophomores Calle Sorensen, Vermillion, 50.59 sec.; Juniors Kayla Avera, Britton, 73 sec.; Seniors Angie O'Neil, Clark, 50.78 sec.; and Alumni Elizabeth Sinclair, Milbank, 24.64 sec. Each winner was presented a stuffed animal for a prize. Avera also received a trophy as the "grand champion" of the contest.

In the regular competition, the top 10 scorers in each of the four events and all-around were recognized, with the first eight awarded a place medal. The final team results were: Vermillion 122.15; Britton 121.7; Milbank 117.99; Chamberlain 107.7; Clark 105.9; Winner 101.65; West Central 95; and Wagner 92.55.
