VHS gymnasts face Yankton/Bon Homme
The Yankton Gazelles hosted a mixture of varsity, JV, and middle school gymnasts in a meet at the Summit Center on the high school campus on Tuesday, Jan. 3 .

The Tanagers, coming off a great win at the Winter Wonderland invite, couldn't maintain the intensity and focus against the Gazelles as they lost 122.05 to 118.20.

"We were unable to find our balance on the beam as we averaged two falls each," said coach Mark Upward. "It was disappointing to watch our performance go backwards. We had some good individual results including Raychel Lorenz's 7.75 on floor exercise, Emily Renner's and Calle Sorenson's 8.15 each on bars, along with Ariel Hofman's ?no fall' beam routine, the first no fall routine of the season, but as a team we slipped."

Vermillion varsity scores and place in each event are listed below.

Ariel Hofman bars, 8.15 (third); beam 8.00 (first); floor 8.55 (first); vault 8.60 (first); all around 33.30 (first).

Stacey Joy floor 3.4.

Totals bars 31.50; beam 24.70; floor 30.70; vault 31.30.

For the JV, Elly Melby placed fifth in the uneven bars, third on beam, and fifth in floor exercise. Since she competed in varsity vault, she was not eligible for JV all-around competition.

Sydney Mount placed sixth in bars and seventh in vault, while Emily Renner, competing in JV beam, won the event. The JV lost 90.4 to 80.5.

"It's exciting to watch the JV gymnasts improve with each meet they compete in as the year progresses," Upward said. "Their confidence and knowledge of the sport improves so much."

Elizabeth Clayborne is the assistant coach for the Tanager gymnastics team.

Following is the scoring for JV competitors in each event:
