Black Raiders down Tanagers 51-43
The Vemillion Tanagers were defeated by the Sioux City East Black Raiders 51-43 in girls' basketball Feb. 14 at Sioux City East.

"We didn't have our best game tonight," said VHS coach Jamie Parish. "East did some things defensively that took us out of our offense and caused us to throw the ball away. Being frustrated on offense had a snowball effect and eventually led to us making some mistakes on defense that have been uncharacteristic of our play lately. Playing road games on Monday and Tuesday makes for a tough start to the week but we still feel we could have played better and had an opportunity to win.

"It was frustrating to watch, but overall we were happy with some of the things we saw. When you're on the road and things aren't going your way, it's pretty easy for kids to throw in the towel and give up. Our kids refocused to start the fourth quarter and battled as hard as we could to get back into the game," he said. "Unfortunately, it was too big of a gap to close and we couldn't seem to get a break that would put us over the hump. East did a nice job in the fourth quarter making 14 free throwz that really made the difference in the game for them."

VHS lost the game from the free throw line, making 6 of 8 charity tosses compared with 18 of 40 for Sioux City East. The loss was aided by the Tanagers committing 21 turnovers.

The Tanagers jumped ahead 7-3 after the opening period, trailed 15-14 at halftime, and then trailed 29-18 after the third quarter.

The loss dropped VHS to a record of 12-7, while Sioux City East improved to 15-5.

VHS made 7 of 16 three-point tries. The Tanagers made 13 of 43 from the field, while Sioux City East was 17 of 35 from the field. Sioux City East sank 1 of 8 three-point tries.

Although defeated, the Tanagers had a number of fine individual efforts.

"Alexa Walker came off the bench to give us a spark; she played extremely hard on defense causing some turnovers and made a big jump shot that kept us hanging around," coach Parish said.
