Tanager freshmen lose thrilling overtime clash
The Vermillion Tanagers lost to the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers 37-35 in a thrilling overtime clash in boys' basketball Jan. 24 at home.

The score was tied 29-29 after regulation.

Kyle Nemec played well both offensively and defensively.


The Tanagers fell behind 12-10 after the opening period, trailed 16-14 at halftime, and then trailed 25-19 going into the final period.

"The boys played hard and are improving each game," said Vermillion freshmen coach Eric VanLacken.

Vermillion is still looking for the first win of the season, now standing at 0-6, while Sioux Falls Christian is now 9-2.

Vermillion connected on 1 of 5 three-point attempts and made 8 of 22 free throw tries. The Tanagers sank 13 of 45 field goal attempts, while Sioux Falls Christian was 14 of 49 from the field. Sioux Falls Christian sank 2 of 5 three-point attempts and made 7 of 12 free throw tries.

Even with the loss, the Tanagers had several good individual efforts.

"Defensively, we played well," coach VanLacken said. "We missed some easy buckets down the stretch that we needed."
