Tanager teamwork leads to victory
Putting it all together as a team, the Vermillion Tanagers shot down the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers 57-38 in girls' basketball Jan. 24 at Vermillion.

"We were happy with the win tonight," said VHS coach Jamie Parish. "SF Christian had won four out of their last five games and came into our gym with some confidence. Coach Roppe is a great coach; his program is moving up in Class A basketball.

"Defensively, our kids still need some work," Parish added. "We play good defense on individual possessions but we are still having too many breakdowns. Our kids need to take on a personal responsibility to defend their own girl and also a shared responsibility to help when needed. It's something that we have been stressing at practice and will continue to do so as we progress.

"Offensively, our kids did a great job of moving the ball," he continued. "SF Christian tried to run some ?junk' defense against our team in hopes of confusing our girls and taking away our top scorers. Our girls did a great job of reacting and finding open teammates. Out of our 21 field goals, 18 of them were assisted and could have been more. We had a few great passes lead to open shots that just rolled out."

The Tanagers jumped ahead 14-9 after the opening period, led 31-17 at halftime, and then led 46-32 after the third quarter.

VHS improved its season mark to 5-4, while Sioux Falls Christian fell to 6-4.

VHS sank 8 of 18 three-point attempts and made 7 of 9 free throw attempts. The Tanagers hit 21 of 44 field goal attempts, while Sioux Falls Christian was 15 of 39 from the field. Sioux Falls Christian made 2 of 6 three-point tries and hit 6 of 11 free throw tries.

The Tanagers had some excellent individual efforts in the win.

"Chelsea Gauer shot the ball very well tonight going 4-7 from the 3 point line," coach Parish said. "She has a knack of hitting some jumpers at crucial times. Krista Froke did a pretty nice job for us on the defensive end working hard and gathering in a lot of rebounds."
