Tanager varsity defeats BHS Watchdogs 62-46
The Vermillion Tanagers beat the Beresford Watchdogs 62-46 in girls' basketball Jan. 31 at Vermillion as the winners led after each quarter.

"Getting a win against Beresford is always an accomplishment," said VHS coach Jamie Parish. "They have good players and always come into our gym ready to play hard. It would have been easy for our kids to make excuses and not compete tonight. With injuries to two of our starters, we really had some question marks going into tonight's game.

"Our bench kids did exactly what we needed them to do tonight. They gave us important minutes to rest some players and keep the flow of the game in our favor," he said. "Brittany Bye and Rachel Odens combine for 13 points that really gave us a lift."

The Tanagers took the lead 13-6 after the first quarter, and margins of 16-11 and 19-16 in the second and third quarters boosted the lead to 48-33 going into the final period.

VHS improved its record to 7-6, while Beresford dropped to 7-6.

VHS hit 7 of 18 three-pointers and hit 7 of 9 from the line. The Tanagers hit 24 of 46 from the field, while Beresford was 18 of 38 from the field. Beresford connected on 5 of 12 three-point tries and connected on 5 of 10 free throw tries.

A number of excellent individual efforts highlighted the win.

"Defensively, we had some great individual efforts and some of our best possession of the season, pressuring the ball, helping and finishing with a rebound," coach Parish said. "We need to find more consistency and string together several defensive possessions instead of isolated ones that stand on their own. "Individually, our kids did a nice job of taking away Beresford's two best players. Michelle Olson, Annie Roche and Alicia Brown took Jensen and Gylfe out of their game; holding them to a combined total of only eight points. Offensively, we had 19 assists again tonight (Brown 9, Roche 7). It's nice to see our kids sharing the ball and finding open teammates," he said.
