Tanagers can’t match Black Raiders on court

The Vermillion Tanagers were downed by the Sioux City East Black Raiders 67-34 in boys' basketball Feb. 4 at Sioux City East.

"We didn't play good basketball tonight," said Vermillion coach Jason Huska. "The Raiders did a good job of taking us out of our game plan. We played too much one-on-one offensively, and did not rebound very well. We can't dwell on this game for long. More big contests are coming up."

The contest was well-played, with the Tanagers committing only 9 turnovers and the Black Raiders committing only 5.

The Tanagers trailed 20-7 after the opening period, trailed 38-17 at halftime, and then trailed 55-28 after the third period.

The loss dropped Vermillion to a record of 5-7, while Sioux City East improved to 11-3.

Vermillion hit 3 of 16 three-point attempts and connected on 5 of 15 free throw tries. The Tanagers hit 13 of 44 from the field, while Sioux City East was 21 of 72 from the field. Sioux City East hit 3 of 21 three-point attempts and hit 10 of 18 free throw tries.

Vermillion was outrebounded 61-25.
