Tanagers' hot shooting downs Chargers 72-52
In a superb team effort, the Vermillion Tanagers shot down the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers 72-52 in boys' basketball Jan. 24 at home. The Tanagers shot an impressive 60 percent from the field in the contest.

Andrew Pier scored 25 points and grabbed five rebounds. Jeff Donnelly contributed with 11 points, six rebounds and five assists. Jordan Boots scored 14 points, making four of nine 3 point attempts, and two assists.

"Pier was three of four shooting 3-pointers, and he made five of six free throws," said Vermillion coach Jason Huska.


The Tanagers trailed 13-12 after the first quarter, led 35-25 at halftime, and then led 59-39 after the third period.

Both teams were sharp from three-point range, with the Tanagers 7 of 14 and the Crusaders 8 of 14.

"I thought our kids played much harder defensively," said coach Huska. "We shot the ball well because we took our kinds of shots. I'm very pleased with our team effort."

Vermillion improved its season mark to 4-5, while Sioux Falls Christian fell to 5-8.

Vermillion sank 7 of 10 free throw attempts. The Tanagers made 29 of 48 field goals, while Sioux Falls Christian was 20 of 47 from the field. The Chargers hit 7 of 8 free throw tries.
