VHS gymnasts suffer second loss to Gazelles
The Tanager gymnastics team dropped a close one to the Yankton Gazelles last Friday night as the Gazelles won 127.65 to 125.15.

"We performed really well all meet long," said coach Mark Upward. "I really thought that we had won the meet until the final scores were read."

Vermillion out-scored Yankton on the balance beam 32.0 to 31.1 and the floor exercise 32.15 to 31.65. Yankton squeaked by Vermillion on the uneven parallel bars 31.75 to 31.95, but really flew by the Tanager vaulters. The Gazelles out-shined the Tanagers on vault 33.15 to 30.05.

Individually, the Tanagers had great performances from several gymnasts. Ariel Hofman won four of the five events for the night. Her only loss on the night was in the uneven parallel event, where she was beaten by Yankton's senior Melissa Nedved.

The Tanagers had excellent performances from Raychel Lorenz, 7.8 on beam, 8.1 on floor and 7.7 on bars. Tristen Upward put together her best performance of the year on floor with an 8.0 and a solid performance on beam with a score of 7.5. Calle Sorensen capped the evening with a 7.75 performance on the uneven bars.

"Our season is rapidly coming to a close," Upward said. "We have Wagner at home on Feb. 2 and then region on Feb. 10, followed by the state meet on Feb. 17 and 18."
