Motorists make tracks on Vermillion's Cherry Street Monday afternoon as a winter storm descended on the city. The blizzard-like conditions, which lasted through much of Monday night into Tuesday morning, the first full day of spring, forced the closing of local schools and had many people enjoying indoor comforts when they weren't out scooping driveways and sidewalks. It is estimated that the Vermillion and Yankton areas received approximately 10 inches of snow. Areas north of Vermillion escaped much of the storm. The blast that hit Vermillion followed a blizzard that blanketed western South Dakota last weekend, forcing athletes and fans attending state basketball tournaments to extend their stays in Rapid City. The S.D. Legislature, scheduled to meet Monday, couldn't convene until Tuesday.
