On March 11-12, The Prairie Lanes was host to the First Annual Vermillion Match-Play Singles Bowling Tournament. The tournament consisted of a six-game qualifying round on Saturday and a match-play elimination bracket round on Sunday.
Twenty-six bowlers from Vermillion, Yankton, Sioux Falls, Huron, Aberdeen and Rapid City competed for the championship. The top qualifiers from Saturday's six-game round were: Jeremy Sonnenfeld, Sioux Falls (1459), Kevin Annis, Vermillion (1377), Mike Kruse Sr., Vermillion (1360), Dennis Tomhave, Vermillion (1355), Jerry Peterson, Yankton (1353), Michael Kruse Jr., Vermillion (1336), Jason Polreis, Sioux Falls (1329), Jerry Sjerven, Aberdeen (1322), Rick Beck, Rapid City (1304), Ranae Janssen, Sioux Falls (1286), Mike Polreis, Sioux Falls (1277), and Roger Woodworth, Huron (1250).
These 12 bowlers competed for the championship on Sunday, with the final match featuring Mike Kruse Sr. against Michael Kruse Jr., a father-son duel for the championship, with Mike Kruse Sr. prevailing for the win. Also highlighting the tournament were a 300 game by Jeremy Sonnenfeld, Sioux Falls, a 290 game by Kevin Jaeger, Vermillion and numerous 700 series.
