Coyote softball sweeps Wayne State, Upper Iowa
The South Dakota women's softball team (7-11) swept Wayne State, 5-0, and Upper Iowa, 8-3, in its first two games at the DakotaDome Invitational, March 18.

With its wins, USD is now 6-1 in its last seven games.

Against Wayne State, the Coyotes scored two runs in the top of the first inning, when seniors Sarah Wrage (Cherokee, IA) and Kerri Starcevich (Monroe, IA) pulled off a double steal and scored on an error.


In the top of the fourth inning, junior Steph Bergman (Ithaca, NE) singled and then advanced to third following a sacrifice bunt and a fielder's choice. Bergman then scored when freshman Ashley Weyers (Lincoln, NE) reached on an error.

Finally, USD tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth inning when Bergman singled to right scoring sophomore Krystal Kirwan (Omaha, NE) and senior Nicole Jones (Rapid City) hit a triple to score Bergman.

Freshman Tagney Jones (Lincoln, NE) won her third game by pitching all seven innings and scattering five hits. Jones struck out three batters and walked two.

In the second game, Jones again picked up the win (4-3) by pitching six and two-thirds innings. She struck out eight batters and walked one.
