They played Beresford at Augustana's Elmen Center in Sioux Falls on Thursday, March 2 at 8:30 p.m.The second round will be at the DakotaDome at Vermillion.
The Eagles have a good chance being the second seed, as favorites over third-seeded Beresford. Head coach Ken Wright said, "I feel pretty good about our chances in districts. We have the talent to knock off anybody. Hopefully the ball bounces in our favor and the calls go our way. We are just going to go out and play hard and do our best."
The "Blue Crew" went on a five-game winning streak to increase their record to 15-5 overall, while they finished 4-2 in the Tri-Valley Conference. Coach Wright has mixed feelings about entering both Class A and leaving Class B districts.
"We have a tough district. I feel in Class ?A', there is probably more parity than Class ?B'. But, there are fewer teams in Class ?A' than Class ?B', so they both have their challenges in getting to the state tournament," he said. "All I know is everybody's record is 0-0, and you have to beat the best to be the best."
We know in post-season play it's do or die and coach feels he has a good team with talent.
"All I can say at this time is I feel we have a very talented team, and we hope to make a strong post-season run," he said. "I feel we have the talent to knock anybody off on any given night. But, like all teams in the post-season, we hope that things will click for us. I will say these kids play very hard and they are very scrappy. We've had some games this year in which we were down double digits in the fourth quarter, and still came back with chances to win. You can never count these kids out ? they are very explosive offensively and defensively. If we come out firing on all cylinders, we can be extremely hard to beat. I'm definitely excited. This is always a fun time of the year for players, coaches and basketball fans alike."
