Twenty students in The University of South Dakota's student chapter of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) hosted a raffle fund raiser to purchase equipment for the Head Start programs at USD.
NAEYC is a professional organization with nearly 100,000 members nationwide who are devoted to providing programs for children and the professional development of teachers. Forty students at USD are active in the student chapter on campus. Student NAEYC members are enrolled in the elementary ed program in the School of Education.
The group raised $270 with this fund raiser, which will be used to purchase science equipment, such as magnifiers and magnets, as well providing posters and other materials to be used in interest and learning centers. Previous chapter fund raisers have provided children's books to children attending the Welcome Table in Vermillion and also aided the Banquet in both Sioux Falls and Yankton. Recently the group contributed children's books to regions affected by Hurricane Katrina.
