IdeaFest features Doctors Without Borders Canada founder
The University of South Dakota will host IdeaFest 2006, an annual event geared towards promoting increased research opportunities and activities for undergraduate students at USD, on March 29.

This year's keynote speaker is Dr. Richard Heinzl, founder of Doctors Without Borders Canada. Heinzl will speak at 8 p.m. in Farber Hall of Old Main. Following his talk, which is free and open to the public, a reception will be held outside Farber Hall.

His lecture will highlight poignant stories from his experiences practicing medicine around the world that show ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Heinzl's insights will provide an unexpected view from the world's conflict zones, emphasize that our similarities outweigh our differences and illustrate how seemingly insignificant things like a simple Frisbee he introduced to a crowd of kids at the frontlines has now permeated an ancient Asian culture.

IdeaFest is a celebration of ideas of the human capacity for thinking, questioning and creativity. Held each spring at USD, IdeaFest gives recognition to student accomplishments through undergraduate research and creative activity.

Students will be sharing their research, service and creative works through poster sessions, displays, artistic performances, oral interpretations, exhibitions and paper presentations.

Laura Jenski, vice president for research at USD, expressed anticipation for this year's research showcase.

"Since 1992, IdeaFest has celebrated our undergraduate students' outstanding accomplishments in research and creative activitiesactivities of the highest caliber. Known nationally for undergraduate research programs, USD encourages innovative and artistic work by undergraduates because these activities deepen the students' learning experience and help to establish life-long critical thinking skills," she said.

IdeaFest 2006 begins with the Student Research Showcase of oral presentations from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Hoy and Frankenfeld Rooms of the Coyote Student Center (CSC). From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., poster and exhibit presentations will be displayed in the Rushmore Rooms. At 3:30 p.m., a roundtable forum titled "Perspective of Healthcare Policy" involving students from USD, faculty and the keynote speaker will be held in the Frankenfeld Rooms of the CSC.
