The Orioles out-scored the Eagles in all the quarters but the third, where I-W edged them 11-9.
Irene-Wakonda shot 100 percent from the line, making eight for eight.
Leading scorers for "Big Blue" were Eric Anderson with 16 points and six rebounds. Adam Polley threw in 11 points while Josh Nielson had 10 points and six rebounds. Robert "Bob" Hauger added six rebounds.
The outcome of the game wasn't what they expected, but they have nothing to be ashamed about.
"I'm very proud of the boys and how they played against Lennox. We fought hard for three quarters, but ran out of gas in the fourth. There's no doubt in my mind that we could have beat Lennox, but we just fell short. Lennox has a solid team, and we take our hats off to them," said head coach Ken Wright.
Lennox pulled off an 11 point win, 60-49, which took them to face the Vermillion Tanagers in region play. Lennox won Region 4A by a score of 58-51.
When two great programs come together, that only makes one strong program.
"First of all, I would like to say the Eagles had a fabulous season. The team proved that Irene and Wakonda combined can play with ?A' schools," said senior Shaun Hessman. "The first year is always a learning year, look for the Eagles to come back strong next year."
"I do want to thank the seniors for everything this year, and let them know it's been a fun ride," Wright said. "I also want to thank the underclassmen, and let them know I'm looking forward to next year. Hopefully, with some hard work this off-season, we can get that district title next year ? or more?"
Irene-Wakonda finishes 16-6 for the season and 4-2 in the Tri-Valley Conference.
