Pennies for Patients hits Wakonda High School

Pennies for Patients hits Wakonda High School
The student council of Wakonda High School just finished up its penny drive which began Monday, Feb. 13 to raise money for charity.

Every penny donated, $176.34, will be given to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, which helps South Dakota, North Dakota, and Minnesota children who have been diagnosed with blood cancer.

The Student Council at WHS sponsors the penny drive and paired each high school class with an elementary class. If the class was too small, three were grouped together. This year's winners, grades 1, 5, and 8, will receive a Dominoes Pizza party.

Both classes added pennies to their donation jar at Wakonda Library. Any silver coins, (nickels, dimes, quarters) and dollar bills counted against them and were subtracted from the amount of pennies. Pennies counted towards the winning total.

Of course the number-one incentive driving each class to win this particular contest is the Domino's pizza party! However helping the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society was just as important.

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society helps put newly diagnosed patients on the path to treatment and recovery. It is the leading resource for information and support for patients diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, their family memories and friends.

Wakonda Student Council asks that you help support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society so they can continue their research to help patients who need it and their families.

If you wish to contact the LLS you can do so by calling their information center at (800) 955-4572 or at their Web site www.LLS.org.
