"The Vermillion wrestling team ended its season with two individuals placing at the state tournament. Senior Kyle Hubert placed third in the 135-pound weight class and sophomore Luke Heine placed fifth in the 160-pound weight class," said coach Casey O'Connor. "Hubert ended his high school wrestling career with an impressive finish. He is a five-time state qualifier and has placed fourth, third twice, and second at the South Dakota Wrestling Tournament throughout his career.
"Hubert is a wrestler and student who will be hard to replace," O'Connor added. "His leadership on the mat and in the practice room will be greatly missed."
The coach noted Heine, a sophomore, qualified for the state tournament last year and set his goals on placing this year. "He had a great tournament and will be a top-ranked competitor for us next year," O'Connor said. "As for the rest of the qualifiers, I feel we are gaining experience with every match. Five of our state qualifiers will be returning next year in addition to two previous year state qualifiers.
"Looking back at our season," the coach added, "I feel our kids continually worked and improved to be successful as a team and as individuals. The Vermillion wrestling squad had a great year and I am especially excited for the years to come for Vermillion wrestling."
