Tanagers finish 7th with rout of Newell
The Vermillion Tanagers hammered the Newell Irrigators 64-34 in girls' basketball March 11 at the Mitchell Corn Palace in the seventh-place game of the Girls State A Tournament.

The final game was a bright spot for the Tanagers' during the 3-day event. Thursday, Vermillion lost a heartbreaker to number one seed Dell Rapids, and Friday the Tanager girls' hopes at trying to secure third place in the tournament were snatched away by a 51-39 loss to McCook Central.

VHS finished its season at 16-9, while Newell fell to 16-11.

"It's real easy to give up on a ball game like that," said VHS coach Jamie Parish. "We played two very good teams earlier in the tournament, and in all honesty, Dell Rapids could become the tournament champions tonight (Saturday) and McCook Central very easily could have won its ball games.

"I'm very proud of the way our kids came out and played hard and battled through it," he said.

Chelsea Gauer found the range from beyond the arc Saturday, sinking three of six attempts from 3-point range.

Parish was especially pleased with the play of Michelle Olson, who scored 21 points, grabbed two rebounds and made three steals.

"It was great to see Michelle Olson in her final ball game just come and light it up, putting the ball in the basket, and continuing to rebound and play defense for us."

The Tanagers led 17-11 at the end of the first period, went into the locker room up 40-16 at halftime, and then led 56-24 going into the final period.

The wide scoring margin allowed coach Parish to allow his entire bench to see action during the game.

"I've got to give the kids from Dell Rapids and McCook a lot of credit," he said. "The reason shots didn't go in for us the other two days is they played good defense. It makes it tougher, and when you miss those first couple shots, it makes it tougher to get the next one. When we came out today and started hitting early, it made all the difference in the world for us."

VHS connected on 10 of 21 three-point attempts and connected on 6 of 11 free throw tries. The Tanagers hit 24 of 46 from the field, while Newell was 11 of 33 from the field. Newell made 2 of 10 three-point attempts and sank 10 of 19 free throw tries.
