"Defensively, we got off to a slow start but refocused after a time-out and then really clamped down," said VHS coach Jamie Parish. "Our girls did some really nice things tonight. We had some concerns about being ready for that first game. A full week off after our non-stop January schedule seems like an eternity."
The Tanagers heated things up from three-point range, hitting 5 of 10 from long distance.
The Tanagers took the lead 24-9 after the first quarter, and margins of 11-4 and 10-8 in the second and third quarters boosted the lead to 45-21 going into the final period.
VHS improved its season mark to 12-7, while Alcester/Hudson fell to 1-19.
VHS hit 2 of 5 free throw attempts. The Tanagers made 23 of 54 field goals, while Alcester/Hudson was 13 of 41 from the field. The Cubs made 6 of 15 from the line.
A number of excellent individual efforts highlighted the win.
"Annie Roche really got us rolling with 13 first quarter points; she came out and knocked down three shots behind the arc against Alcester's zone," coach Parish said. "We are always happy with that first win in the district, no matter how things have gone during the year it becomes a ?win or go home' situation and it's important to get that first half win."
