VHS debaters attend state tournament
Vermillion High School debaters attended the state tournament March 3-4 at Aberdeen Central High School and brought home an assortment of awards.

Accompanying the debate squad were coach Jeffrey Connolly and assistant coach Paul Tschetter.

Vermillion students went to finals in various categories of individual events. Junior Hannah Pommersheim and sophomore Amanda Barton both were finalists in the category of domestic extemporaneous speaking, winning fifth and fourth place, respectively.

Senior Monica Gutzman was a finalist in foreign extemporaneous speaking, earning sixth place.

Freshman Alicia Enterman went to finals in the oratory event and came out with sixth place.

For the third time in a row, VHS took first and second place in policy debate. Senior Molly Green and junior Hannah Pommersheim were the champions in this category. Senior Monica Gutzman, junior Nahuel Telleria, and sophomores Amanda Barton and Micaela Telleria won runners-up.

Also participating in the tournament were sophomores Jane Reasoner and Maggie Green, junior Brody Stone and senior Raleigh Tiahrt. They all were involved in the public forum category.

Even though the team ended the season on a very happy note, the end was bittersweet. Coach Connolly bade the team a sweet adieu after two years' service. With assistant coach Tschetter in charge of the reins, the debaters will tackle the topic of national service next year.
