USD softball falls to Minnesota State in NCC double-header
The South Dakota women's softball team (14-23, 2-4 NCC) dropped a pair of games in a North Central Conference double-header to the Minnesota State Mavericks (21-18, 4-2 NCC) by scores of 2-0 in 13 innings and 4-1 at the Diamond at Gage Towers in Mankato, MN, April 12.

Game 1 MSU 2, USD 0 (13 innings)

The Mavericks scored two runs in the bottom of the 13th inning to end USD's two-game winning streak on a two-run HR by Abby Wagner to end the marathon first game.

MSU had its chance to get on the scoreboard early in the game, but Wagner was gunned out trying to score in the second inning, on a throw by center fielder Sarah Wrage (Cherokee, IA).

After that, USD's freshman Tagney Jones (Lincoln, NE), who pitched all 12 2/3 innings, didn't allow a runner to reach third base until the eighth inning. Even that scoring chance stalled for the Mavericks, as Jones retired the final three batters of the inning.

The Coyotes had its first scoring chance in the fourth inning, when junior Steph Bergman (Ithaca, NE) reached on a walk and then advance to second on a sacrifice bunt by Wrage. However, the next two batters were both retired. Then in the 10th inning, senior Alisha Yowell (Omaha, NE) led off the inning with a double, but the next three USD batters were retired in order.

Yowell finished with two hits to lead USD, including the only extra base hit of the game.

Jones, who fell to 7-9 on the season, allowed just four hits in the first five innings and nine for the game. She surrendered both runs, while recording eight strikeouts and walking just three batters.
