Game 1 � MSU 2, USD 0 (13 innings)
The Mavericks scored two runs in the bottom of the 13th inning to end USD's two-game winning streak on a two-run HR by Abby Wagner to end the marathon first game.
MSU had its chance to get on the scoreboard early in the game, but Wagner was gunned out trying to score in the second inning, on a throw by center fielder Sarah Wrage (Cherokee, IA).
After that, USD's freshman Tagney Jones (Lincoln, NE), who pitched all 12 2/3 innings, didn't allow a runner to reach third base until the eighth inning. Even that scoring chance stalled for the Mavericks, as Jones retired the final three batters of the inning.
The Coyotes had its first scoring chance in the fourth inning, when junior Steph Bergman (Ithaca, NE) reached on a walk and then advance to second on a sacrifice bunt by Wrage. However, the next two batters were both retired. Then in the 10th inning, senior Alisha Yowell (Omaha, NE) led off the inning with a double, but the next three USD batters were retired in order.
Yowell finished with two hits to lead USD, including the only extra base hit of the game.
Jones, who fell to 7-9 on the season, allowed just four hits in the first five innings and nine for the game. She surrendered both runs, while recording eight strikeouts and walking just three batters.
MSU's Janet Barker (11-6) picked up the win by pitching 13 innings, scattering five hits and striking out eight batters, while walking three.
Game 2 � MSU 4, USD 1
Minnesota State scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie and added two more runs in the sixth inning, to sweep the double-header from the Coyotes.
The Maverick's Lynndi Decker single with one out in the third inning and scored on an error by the shortstop to give MSU the early 1-0 lead.
USD tied the game in the top of the fourth inning, when Wrage was hit by a pitch and then advanced to third on a failed pick-off attempt. She later scored on a throwing error by the second baseman.
MSU added a run with two outs in the fourth inning and used three-straight hits in the sixth inning, two singles and a triple, to provide some insurance to hold on for the win.
Yowell fell to 5-11 on the season by allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits in six innings. She recorded three strikeouts and walked four batters.
Brooke McKelvogue picked up the win for MSU, by holding the Coyotes to one unearned run and two hits.
Wrage and senior Kerri Starcevich (Monroe, IA) picked up two singles for USD in the second game.
