USD softball suffers pair of losses at Minnesota-Duluth
The South Dakota women's softball team (15-30, 2-10 NCC) suffered losses of 4-3 in 11 innings and 3-1 against the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs (24-15, 2-6 NCC) April 22 at Junction Avenue Field in Duluth, MN.

Game 1 � UMD 4, USD 3

UMD's Kalli Kucharyski hit a walk-off solo HR in the bottom of the 11th inning to cap a 4-3 comeback win for the Bulldogs.

The Coyotes jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning on an RBI double by sophomore Abby Poulter (Colfax, IA) and RBI singles from freshman Ashley Weyers (Lincoln, NE) and sophomore Krystal Kirwan (Omaha, NE).

The Bulldogs scored their first run in the bottom of the sixth inning and then added two more scores in the bottom of the seventh inning on back-to-back RBI doubles by Gina Zech and Myriam Trepanier to tie the game.

The game remained scoreless until Kucharyski's heroics in the bottom of the 11th.

USD freshman Tagney Jones (Lincoln, NE) pitched 10 1/3 innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on 13 hits, while striking out five batters and walking none.

UMD's Jessica Horne picked up the win by pitching the final three innings and holding the Coyotes hitless. Brittany Hansen pitched the first eight innings and allowed three unearned runs and 12 hits.

Game 2 � UMD 3, USD 1

The Bulldogs scored three runs over the second and third innings and held off a Coyote come-back to sweep the series.

Michelle Butkus started the scoring for UMD with a solo HR in the bottom of the second inning and Zech added a two-RBI double in the second to give the Bulldogs all the scoring they would need.

In the top of the fifth inning, senior Alisha Yowell (Omaha, NE) doubled to lead off the inning and sophomore Katie Swanson (Omaha, NE) singled before junior Steph Bergman (Ithaca, NE) grounded out to the shortstop to score Yowell.

USD had a chance to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning, as they had runners on second and third with one out, but failed to score any runs.

Yowell, who went 2-for-3 at the plate, pitched six innings and recorded two strikeouts, while allowing three runs on seven hits.

Horne garnered her second win of the double-header by allowing one run and six hits over seven innings. She struck out six batters and walked none.
