Babb is a senior at Vermillion High School and will be attending the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) in the fall where she will enter the pre-dental program.
The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) program was established in 1999 and is funded by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and administered by the United Negro College Fund in partnership with the American Indian Graduate Center (AIGC) Scholars Fund. The scholarship assists students in meeting the cost of attendance at the college of their choice. The scholarship allows students to make decisions regarding college based on what's best for them and their future goals without any financial barriers.
Babb, a member of the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe, Lower Brule, was one of only 1,000 students selected from more than 62,000 individuals who were nominated for the scholarship. Students must display high academic achievement, and demonstrate strong leadership skills and community involvement.
The program also provides leadership development opportunities, to insure that scholar's graduate prepared to become strong leaders in their professions and in their communities. Patty Larsen and Len Griffith, both guidance counselors at Vermillion High School, nominated Babb.
