Last fall, local quilters including Sue May, president of the Dakota Quilt Guild, and Carol Winter, Four Seasons Fabrics, met with representatives of the choir to brainstorm ways they could cooperate on a spring concert titled "A Choral Quilt Pieced By Song."
That concert has been set for Thursday, June 1, at 7:30 p.m., in Marian Auditorium on the Mount Marty College campus, Yankton. The YCC Concert and Preparatory Choirs will sing music evoking past times and home, and some of that music has directly inspired the quilts now hanging at Four Seasons Fabrics.
Area quilters created wall hangings tied to concert song titles. Nine hangings have been donated, all but one available by silent auction. Bids can be made now through Monday, May 29, at Four Seasons, or the night of the concert, from 6 to 9:30 p.m., during which time the artworks will be on display in North Whitby Lounge, immediately adjacent to Marian Auditorium.
Participating quilters were Joyce Brunken, Anne Gifford (a YCC Concert Choir member), Kim Kappel, Ladonna Kniffen, Kathryn (Kay) Nelson, Jill Paulson, Bev Peitz, and Janet Waggoner.
In addition, Sue May made and donated a queen-sized star quilt, with musical motifs, for raffle in support of the choir. That quilt is also now on display at Four Seasons, and tickets may be purchased there or at Rexall, in downtown Yankton.
Four Seasons Fabrics, owned and operated by Misty and Jon Nockels, is open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday; from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursdays; and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays.
