Encore Choir makes return appearance

Encore Choir makes return appearance
When artistic performers hear shouts of "encore," they know they have done something right. That is the case with the YCC Encore Choir which, after a one-year hiatus, is making a return appearance by popular demand.

Two years ago, the board and staff of the Yankton Children's Choir (YCC) heeded requests from its Concert Choir graduates to provide another opportunity for singers to participate in an advanced choral ensemble.

That season, under the leadership of YCC Choral Director Lea Ann Schramm, was a success by any measure. However, she felt herself underqualified to continue directing this choir for 9th-12th-graders, as her expertise and experience are in working with younger singers.

Thus, the Encore Choir took a year off while searching for a new director one who would bring a exceptional level of expertise to the job. The YCC's quest ended this spring with the hiring of Eugene Brinkmeyer, former professor of music at both Mount Marty and Yankton Colleges.

Now, young people both former YCC members and others in grades 9 through 12 during the upcoming school year, are invited to try out for the "encore" season of the YCC Encore Choir. Auditions have been set for Friday, June 9, from 5 to 9 p.m., at the United Church of Christ-Congregational, 5th & Walnut, Yankton (please use west alley door of education wing).

Encore Choir auditions are first come, first served, and do not require preparation of a solo; they will include exercises to test choral singing ability, and a demonstration of vocal range.

This special choir is designed around the busy schedules of high school students, rehearsing just two Saturday mornings a month, from late August through December only. In addition to a performance in the YCC winter concert, one or two additional smaller appearances will be scheduled.
