In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, May 8-12, I want to encourage all members of our community to express their thanks to our local teachers.

In my experience with two young children in the Vermillion Public School District, I have encountered devoted individuals who continuously strive to inspire and motivate their students. Their devotion and hard work is even more exceptional when you consider that they teach in South Dakota, where teachers earn the lowest average salary of any state in the union.
In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, the Vermillion Parent-Teacher Association will sponsor a book drive for Jolley, Austin, and Vermillion Middle Schools. If you have any gently used books that you no longer need, please consider donating them to the schools. Drop-off boxes will be located at Hy-Vee, Jones' Food, the middle school, and both elementary schools during the week of May 8-12.
Next week is our chance to give back to the teachers who give so much to our children and community all year. Please make this year's Teacher Appreciation Week special with your book donations and your support of our community's educators.
