Brinkmeyer conducts College Prep Choir
Many high school seniors now graduate with college credits already on their transcripts, thanks to Advanced Placement classes. Now the Yankton Children's Choir (YCC) is offering a "college prep" choir for high school students no academic credit, but the opportunity to sing under the baton of a distinguished college professor.

Eugene Brinkmeyer will conduct the YCC Encore Choir, open to all area young people in grades nine through 12 this coming fall. (Participants need not be former YCC members.)

Auditions for the elite choir have been set for Friday, June 9, from 5 to 9 p.m., at the United Church of Christ-Congregational, 5th & Walnut, Yankton (please use west alley door of education wing). Auditions are first come, first served, and do not require preparation of a solo. They will include exercises to test choral singing ability, and a demonstration of vocal range.

Brinkmeyer brings to the YCC staff a resum studded with exceptional teaching, conducting, and performance experience.

He is currently interim organist at the United Church of Christ in Vermillion.

, he was longtime minister of music at the Presbyterian Church, Bound Brook, NJ; First Congregational Church (UCC), Sioux Falls; and the United Church of Christ-Congregational, Yankton.

For many years, he was also associate professor of music at Yankton College, and then Mount Marty, teaching voice, piano, and organ, as well as conducting the Yankton College choir. At Mount Marty, he served as humanities division chair, and interim academic dean.

Brinkmeyer has also been involved in theatre and opera as both a performer and as musical director of productions such as The Fantasticks, HMS Pinafore, Kiss Me, Kate, The Reluctant Dragon, Amahl and the Night Visitors, and Into the Woods.

As founder and original administrator of the J. Laiten Weed Fund, he commissioned music from, and worked closely with, eminent contemporary composers and conductors. He has conducted multiple performances of Yankton's Masterworks Chorus, as well as Summer in the Park choral concerts; has been an adjudicator in regional public school vocal contests; and performed recitals in South Dakota, New Jersey, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Iowa.

The YCC Encore Choir is designed around the busy schedules of high school students, rehearsing just two Saturday mornings a month, from late August through December only. In addition to a performance in the YCC winter concert, one or two smaller appearances will also be scheduled.
