The funding package includes a $125,00 grant from the Solid Waste Management Program and $445,000 loan from the Regional Landfill Assistance Program.
Gov. Mike Rounds recommended the funding, which was approved when the board met June 22-23 in Pierre.
"The Vermillion Regional Landfill is taking steps to properly close one trench and construct a new one to provide additional disposal capacity," said Gov. Rounds. "These funds will help Vermillion make the needed improvements to its regional landfill and continue to meet the solid waste disposal needs of its users for years to come."
The total estimated cost of the project is $570,000. The loan is 2.5 percent for eight years.
The Solid Waste Management Program provides grants and loans for solid waste disposal, recycling, and waste tire projects statewide. Revenues come from dedicated state solid waste fees that are deposited in the state Water and Environment Fund. The Legislature appropriates Water and Environment Funds annually to the Solid Waste Management Program through the Governor's Omnibus Water Funding Bill.
The Regional Landfill Assistance appropriation provides grants and low interest loans through a special appropriation by the 2006 Legislature to provide financial assistance for regional landfills.
