Stingers suffer loss

The girls U-14 Vermillion Stingers softball team finally felt the sting of failure June 21 as they lost the opening game of a doubleheader in Hartford against the Sparks, 4-2.

Brianna Brinkman gave up five hits and two walks, registering five Ks. One of the four runs was unearned, but the team could muster only two runs on five hits. The loss was charged against Brinkman.

Jana Bye was 2 for 2 hitting; Brinkman scored a run on 1 for 2 at bats; Chelsea Houska went 1 for 2, 1 run, 1 rbi; Erica Johnson had the other hit.

Line score: Sparks � 5 R, 5 H, 2 E, 5 LOB; Stingers � 2 R, 5 H, 1 E, 7 LOB.

The second game against the Sluggers put Jenny Bye on the mound in a five-inning game. The team rebounded from the previous loss by scoring an 8-6 victory, given to the starter. Bye gave up six runs on five hits, while registering seven Ks.

With the Stingers leading the contest 6-1 in the second inning, the Sluggers scored four runs in the top of the third, and the predetermined home team responded with two runs. The run scored by the opponents in the final inning was not enough to overcome the eight points on the boards.

Scoring for the Stingers were: Brianna Brinkman � 2 for 2, 2 runs; Chelsea Houska � 1 for 2, 1 run; Erica Johnson, Jana Bye, Ali True, and Lindsay Robinet each scored a run; Kayla Munger was 1 for 2 with a run.
