The fund will help offset medical expenses for University of South Dakota football coach Freidel, who was injured in an accident on June 19.
Freidel, assistant head football coach/defensive coordinator at USD, remains in critical but stable condition (as of noon, July 6) in the Intensive Care Unit of the Wyoming Medical Center in Casper, WY. Freidel suffered head trauma as well as injuries to his left eye and arm in the accident.
Freidel is in a coma, which he fell into following the accident. At a minimum, Freidel will be hospitalized at the Wyoming Medical Center for another two weeks before any consideration can be made about a transfer or a move to another health care facility.
Anyone interested in making a donation to the fund may do so at any Wells Fargo location. Checks should be made payable to the "Benefit Fund for Mike Freidel" and not addressed to an individual's name.
Originally of Armour, Freidel is in his third season as the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator for USD. He also serves as an assistant professor in the health, physical education and recreation department.
Overall, Freidel is in his 26th season as a collegiate coach. He has coached for five seasons at USD, 16 years at Augustana and also coached at Southwest Minnesota State in Marshall, MN, for five years and Dakota State in Madison, for one year.
