Carnival will celebrate state-of-the-art playground
Sabrina Schnack, and her friend, Jessica Nygaard, could hardly wait Monday for the installation of the new playground equipment at Prentis Park to be complete.

"This is way better than the old playground," Sabrina said, chatting with Jessica as they peered over fencing to get a close look at the new equipment's features. "I can't wait to go on that thing."

"I don't even know what that is," Jessica replied, pointing to a portion of the new playground.

"That's what's so cool about it," Sabrina said.

Sabrina, Jessica, and other kids of all ages won't have to wait much longer for a fun time at Prentis Park, thanks to the generous donations of over 100 citizens and friends and the city of Vermillion.

To celebrate this latest civic improvement in Vermillion, there will be a carnival and ribbon cutting for the playground equipment on Tuesday, July 18 from 5 to 7 p.m.

"The playground committee is planning a wonderful evening to celebrate the successful conclusion of the fund-raising campaign and the purchase of this new equipment that is safe, age appropriate and handicapped accessible. We hope the citizens of Vermillion, the donors and the children will join us for the ribbon cutting, the free food and all of the fun activities that we have planned," said Mary Edelen, a member of the committee.

Besides the ribbon cutting, which will take place at 5:30 p.m., there will be free hot dogs and pop donated by Hy-Vee, free ice cream cones donated by Doo Wop, face painting by the Vermillion PTA, clowns and lots of balloons, a jumping center donated by Ace Hardware and miniature golf sponsored by the Clay County 4-H.

Jenny French, a member of the committee, added, "We are so happy that we were able to raise enough money to help the city purchase this wonderful equipment, and we hope that everyone will join us for the dedication and all of the activities that we've planned. We anticipate adding some benches around the equipment and a few more handicapped-accessible pieces. This will truly be one of the premier playgrounds in the region."
