The couple met at the University of Wisconsin � River Falls. They were married on Aug. 4, 1956, in the Methodist Church in Hammond, WI.
Cleland served in the Army and taught high school and college mathematics. He was a professor at The University of South Dakota from 1962 to 1994.
Pat taught high school English from 1956 to 1960. She was also the library media director in the Vermillion Middle and High Schools from 1974 to 1996.
Both have been active in their church and other community and educational projects. Their children are Carmen Cook, an attorney at Starbucks Coffee Company in Seattle,WA, Jeff Cook, a director at Raytheon Corporation who lives in Plano, TX, with his wife Wendy, Kathy Cook, assistant professor of psychology at Seattle University, and Jeannie Cook, software administrative assistant at Microsoft in Seattle.
