Lennox overcomes Post #1 in 3B championship game
After four days and nine games, the eight-team field in the Region 3B Tournament was reduced to two survivors – Post # 1 (4-0 record) and Lennox (3-1 record).

In the first encounter of the tourney, Vermillion bested Lennox 12-8.

The return confrontation was played on Tuesday, July 18 with the outcome to determine whether Vermillion, with a win, would qualify for state, or if Lennox could prolong the tournament with a victory.

Lennox Post #174 made a resounding 25-10 win in eight innings. They were leading 19-10 as the visiting team, then scored six runs in the top of the eighth.

Vermillion made a vain attempt to counter the advantage but couldn't score in the final half inning.

Zach Weiss started and went 2 1/3 innings, giving up five runs on six hits. Scott Morrison relieved and gave up five runs on six hits in 1 2/3 innings.

With the pitching staff growing very thin, Jeff Donnelly took over and tried to quash the assault, but was not successful.

Line score: Lennox 25 R, 22 H, 3 E, 9 lob; Vermillion 10 R, 14 H, 3 E, 6 lob.

The loss meant that a second game had to be played in order to determine the state qualifier.

There was a coin flip to determine home team status, which went Lennox's way. Kyle Mollet started and was charged with six runs on six hits, recording two Ks.

Scott Morrison took over and went the rest of the way. Vermillion led 10-8 in the ninth inning, but Lennox scored two runs to tie and send the game into extra innings.

As the visitor, Vermillion threatened with two runners on base in the 10th, but couldn't score. Lennox also had two men on base in the 10th, when Justin Foss hit a walk-off home run to terminate the tournament and end Post #1's hopes for a state bid.
