The Big Kahuna team, which merged with several players of the team Good Times of Beresford, outlasted seven other teams in a one-day tournament played in 100 degree temps over a 14-hour period.
On the way to the finals, the Kahunas tallied victories over Fort Randall Communications of Centerville, Hill Pharmacy of Beresford and
Dick's Stix of Irene/Viborg.
In the championship round, they met with perennial powerhouse Desert Inn of Centerville. At that point, the Kahunas were the only undefeated team of the tournament, but they dropped their first game to the Desert Inn only to come back to snatch a come-from-behind victory from the defending league champions.
The Kahunas found themselves at a 12-2 deficit at the bottom of the fourth, but scored five runs in the fourth inning and six runs in the fifth inning.
They held the DI team by totaling 10 unanswered runs to win the game by a score of 13-12.
The Big Kahuna team members noted that, years from now, when they are all older men relating stories of past glory, they will remember the moment they became champions on Aug. 5.
